Mac Remote Access Setup | Print |
Remote connection to a Mac on campus is a great way to work from home or abroad without having to tote a work computer around, or install all of your software on your personal computer. 
Remotely controlling a Macintosh desktop using VNC utilities on a Macintosh or Windows remote station

I. Configure host Macintosh to be controlled

1. Login to your Macintosh.

2. Download OSXvnc here.

3. Install OSXvnc by dragging the program to your Applications folder.

4. Open OSXvnc by double clicking the application.

5. CRITICAL: Enter a password of your choice in the “Password” field.  WARNING:  If you do not enter a securepassword in this field, your Macintosh will be left open to malicious exploitation.

6. Take note of the “IP Address” listing.  This IP is specific to your machine and will be needed to connect from the controller computer.

7. Click on the “Startup” tab and then click on the “Configure Startup Item” button.  You will be asked to under your user password to authenticate the installation of the startup item.

8. Restart your Macintosh.

 


II. Configuring a Windows PC to connect to the host Macintosh

1. Using the “Start” menu, select “Windows Update” to visit the Microsoft Update site and get the latest MS security updates.  For specifics on how to properly use the Microsoft Update site, please see the How to: Use Microsoft Update document which can be accessed here.

2. Download and install Sophos Anti-Virus version 5 here.

3. Ensure that administrative users on the controller PC have appropriate passwords.

4. Download Real VNC viewer here.

5. Double click the downloaded file to install Real VNC on your PC.

6. Once the program is installed, select it from the “Start” menu to begin the program.

7. In the “Server” box, type in the IP address that you noted in step I 5.

8. Click “OK.”

9. Enter the password that you specified in step I 6.

 


III. Configuring a Macintosh to connect to the host Macintosh

1. Download the Chicken of the VNC here .

2. Install the program by dragging the program icon into your Applications folder

3. Open Chicken of the VNC by double clicking it

4. Click once on the “New Server” listing on the left side of the program windowe.    In the “Host” box, type in the IP address that you noted in step I f.

5. In the “Password” box, type in the password you specified in step I 6.

6. Click “Connect”.
