How to Set Up Samba

"Samba" is a type of Network Connection that allows easy access to
Unix files systems from Microsoft Windows (NT/2K/XP/98) Operating Systems.

  1. The First Step to creating a Samba connection to your amadeus account is modifying your 'lmhosts' file so that you can easily find amadeus.
    • The lmhosts file is located in the '\Winnt\system32\drivers\etc' folder on NT/XP/2K machines and is in the '\Windows' folder for 95/98 machines.
You may find only a file named 'lmhosts.SAM'. This is a sample configuration file; make a copy of it named 'lmhosts' in same folder(this file must not have an extension of any kind, Notepad and other editors will try to add a .txt to the end, you may have to remove it after saving the file).
    • Open the 'lmhosts' file with notepad and add the following line(s) at the bottom:
      128.196.124.145 amadeus #PRE #address for amadeus server
    • Save the file.
    • Reset NetBIOS name cache
      1. Open Command Prompt and type 'nbtstat -R'
      2. If you get a "Failed to Purge..." message, make sure you're logged onto the network (see step 3), and make sure the 'lmhosts' file exists in the proper folder.
      3. Using the command 'nbtstat -c' will display the cache contents for verification.
  2. WinNT/2K/XP/98 Users: It is necessary to make a correction to your registry to allow for plain text passwords to be sent to the Samba server.
    • Download winnt.reg, win2k_xp.reg or 98fix.inf (Hold down the 'Shift' key and click on link).
    • Right-Click on the file and select 'Merge' for WinNT or 'Install' for Win98 from the popup menu (This will make the registry change for you).
    • Reboot the machine.
  3. Win95/98 Users: It is necessary that the username of your Amadeus account is the same as your Win95/98 Logon name.
    • Win95: From the 'Start' button, select 'Shutdown' then 'Close all programs and log on as different user?'
    • Win98: From the 'Start' Button, select 'Log Off ...'
    • Enter your amadeus username(case sensitive) with no password (unless the username with a password already exists on your machine).
  4. Right-Click on the 'My Computer' desktop icon, and select 'Map Network Drive...'
    • Specify 'Drive:' letter (default is the next available letter).
    • In the 'Path:' box enter '\\amadeus\<username>'
    • WinNT: There is a 'Connect As:' option here in which you can enter your amadeus username(case sensitive) if it does not match your NT username.
    • Click on 'OK'.
    • A password dialog box will open; enter your amadeus account password.
  5. Congratulations!
You should now have a new drive letter that points to your folder on amadeus. You may now use 'Windows Explorer' to manage your files.
